Gum Swelling Home Remedies
When you think about dental health, you are more likely to just think about preventing cavities in your teeth and keeping your breath fresh. It is, however, also important to pay attention to your gums as it plays a significant role not only in your dental health but also to your overall well being.
Swollen and bleeding gums are usually signs of gum disease. However, there are a number of other things that could be causing your gum problems such as the following:
- Gingivitis – the most common cause of swollen gums, where gums become red, swollen and bleed
- Periodontitis – referring to inflammation around tooth and is the advanced state of gingivitis
- Nutritional Deficiency – lack of important vitamins such as Vitamin B and C
- Mouth Infections – caused by virus and fungi such as herpes and thrush
Finding out which one exactly caused your gum problems would, of course, require that you consult your dentist. If for some reason, you cannot get immediate medical attention, there are several steps that you can take to at home in order to minimize gum damage and relieve discomfort. Here are some of them:
Salt on Warm Water
By gargling water with higher sodium content you can kill almost if not all the bacteria that caused your swollen gums. It also helps to prevent infections that might lead to other health issues. Simply dissolve about 2-3 teaspoons of salt to a cup of warm water and your mouth with it focusing on your gums. Repeat this cleansing process 2-3 times a day or as necessary.
Apply Turmeric Paste
Turmeric is a common household spice which is also popular as an ideal home remedy for swollen gums. It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce pain, swelling and inflammation. To make the paste, simply mix ¼ teaspoon of turmeric powder with a little water. Apply the paste and leave it on for about five minutes.
Black tea bags
The bags have tannins in them that can help reduce inflammation. They also have antioxidant properties promoting good oral health. Just place a bag in boiling water for 2 to 3 minutes. Allow it to cool to a bearable temperature and hold the tea bag on the affected area of your gums for 10 to 15 minutes.
This plant also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that can help prevent the growth of plaque-causing bacteria and soothe inflamed gums. Just take the gel with your clean finger and rub the gel on the affected gums. Gently massage for 1 to 2 minutes and rinse with warm water.
A Cold Compress
If you’re out of all those mentioned above, the old cold compress remedy should also work. It can provide quick relief for sore or swollen gums, by helping to reduce pain and preventing further swelling. Just hold the compress against your face for about five minutes or until you feel the area becoming a bit numb. A bag of frozen peas in a thin towel works well too. Remember only to hold the compress against your face and not directly on the swollen gums.
Gum Disease Natural Treatment
Gum disease or periodontal disease is an inflammation of the gum line that can quickly progress to affect the bone supporting your teeth. It starts with a simple bacterial growth in your mouth that if not treated immediately could result in tooth loss. It is known to have three stages starting with Gingivitis, to Periodontitis, and sometimes even to Advanced periodontitis.
As it is not always painful, it is highly important to be familiar with the signs and symptoms of having a gum disease. If it’s only at the early stage or Gingivitis, the gums will start to become red, swollen, and bleed easily. The pain here is still manageable as it is almost nil and the disease is still reversible with professional treatment. If it is left untreated at this level, however, gingivitis advances to periodontitis where the plaque would have already spread and grown below the gum line. There is also severe irritation in the gums now as toxins produced by the bacteria start coming in. The gums would start to separate from the teeth to form spaces and eventually, the teeth become loose and are removed.
In general, any of the following symptoms may be a sign of serious gum problems:
- Red or swollen gums
- Tender or bleeding gums
- Receding gums
- Loose or sensitive teeth
- Bad breath despite brushing
The question now is, is there a cure?Although the only way to totally cure gum disease is to seek treatment from your trusted dentist, there are home remedies and natural treatments which could still work if the gum disease has not yet progressed too far. They are the following:
1. RINSE – Warm saltwater rinse reduces inflammation and kills bacteria. Avoid using daily, however, as too much use will damage the teeth. Rinsing with Hydrogen peroxide can also be a great alternative since it has the same effect killing the bacteria that causes gum irritation.
2. PASTE – A mixture of baking soda and water is known to be an effective neutralizer of the acids that causes gum disease. The paste can be used to brush the teeth or applied directly on to the affected area. You can also use Garlic and Turmeric if you’re feeling a little more inventive. Both of these naturally-occurring foods are full of antibacterial properties and work as great anti-inflammatory agents.
3. OIL PULLING – although not exactly guaranteed by researchers, this is a popular practice among people who claim to have noticed an improvement using this treatment. It only requires natural oils such as mustard oil, sesame oil or coconut oil to fight off the bacteria that causes gum disease.
On top of these natural treatments, there is perhaps no better way to protect your dental health than proper oral hygiene. To improve your gum problems and avoid having them again in the future, make sure to brush and floss at least twice a day and use mouthwash to help reduce the amount of plaque build up. It will also help tremendously if you avoid sugary foods and drinks and quit smoking.
First Aid forTooth Pain
Ogden Nash once said: “Some tortures are physical, and some are mental, but the one that is both— is dental.” If you’ve ever had any toothaches before, you sure would know exactly what Nash meant.
Tooth decay, gum disease, loose fillings, abscesses, exposed tooth roots, sinus pressure, trauma or irritation commonly induces toothaches. The pain may come and go, but when it kicks, it can include sharp pain, dull aches, throbbing, and sometimes even burning. This is due to nerve endings that are exposed causing the tooth to be sensitive to heat, cold or pressure.
The worst kind of toothache, however, is that which includes swelling of the face or neck and fever. It also comes with red, swollen or bleeding gums and unusually bad breath even after brushing. When this happens, you should make an appointment to see the dentist immediately as these are the type of toothaches that get worse by the minute. If they are not promptly treated professionally, they may even lead to more serious medical complications.
First Aid Remedy
Most Americans agree that any pain in the teeth must be considered an emergency. This is because toothaches are never tolerable and the pain seems to get worse the longer one waits out. Unfortunately, however, it is not very unusual that one cannot get a hold of their dentist immediately upon contact.
So until your dentist can attend to you, you can try these first-aid tips for that toothache:
- Always start with rinsing your mouth with warm water.
If you can tolerate the taste, Saltwater would be perfect as it is incredibly cleansing. Just dissolve a teaspoon of salt into a cup of boiling water and wait until it cools down. Gargle some in your mouth for a minimum of 30 seconds for as often as necessary. It will surely prevent further swelling and effectively cleans the toothache area.
You can also rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide. This is a great alternative to salt as it also cleans the gums around the problem tooth and kills any bacteria. It will provide some pain relief and help you manage the discomfort until you can see your dentist.
- Use dental floss to remove any food particles or plaque wedged between your teeth. When particles are huge than normal and stuck in between your teeth, a rinse will not be enough. Flossing may help a toothache if it is the result of food debris lodged in the tooth, which exacerbates the pain of cavities or worsens gingivitis. As such, cleaning your mouth thoroughly can make the pain go away./li>
- Take an over-the-counter (OTC) pain reliever to dull the ache. It is also important to note that placing painkillers directly against your gums may burn your gum tissue, so this should be avoided./li>
- You can also apply an over-the-counter antiseptic that contains benzocaine directly to the irritated tooth and gum for temporary relief. Use this sparingly, however, as an overdose of numbing medications can also cause fatal side effects if too much of it is absorbed through your skin and into your blood./li>
- If the toothache is caused by trauma to the tooth, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to relieve pain and control swelling./li>
Can You Get Rid of Gingivitis?
Gingivitis is the most common and the earliest form of gum disease, affecting 3 out of 4 American adults by the year 2016. This gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, generally caused by a bacterial infection but it can also be attributed from plaque deposits on teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to a more severe infection known as periodontitis. Red and swollen, often bleeding gums are the most popular symptoms. But in mild cases of gingivitis, patients may not even be aware since there will be no pain or discomfort to suggest so.
Other than poor dental hygiene, other several things can raise one’s risk for gingivitis. Infections and systemic diseases, for example, are some of them. Smoking, bad eating habits, high sugar level and uncontrolled diabetes can also be the culprits. In some cases, even pregnancy can raise the risk since the hormonal changes encountered during this time increase the sensitivity of the gums.
If the patient is diagnosed early and given immediate and proper treatment, gingivitis can be successfully reversed. The treatment should always involve care and attention by a dental professional, but the patient can also carry out home remedies and natural treatments.
Professional Care and Treatment
The following are steps your dentist will most probably take to get rid of gingivitis:
- SCALING – removing plaque and tartar. Patients usually find it uncomfortable, especially if tartar build-up is extensive and the gums are overly sensitive.
- PROFESSIONAL TEETH CLEANING – use of different tools to clean your teeth through loosening and removing deposits
- FIXING OTHER TEETH PROBLEMS – a crooked teeth or badly fitted crowns and bridges, may also be the reason for the gum swelling. They can also make it more difficult to properly remove plaque and tartar build up. As such, there is a need for the doctor to address these problems as well.
- PROVIDE MEDICATIONS – there are over-the-counter medications that can be prescribed such as an antibiotic mouthwash containing chlorhexidine to disinfect the mouth. Time-release antiseptic chips and Antibiotic microspheres made with minocycline can also be inserted in the pockets of the teeth after scaling. There are also oral antibiotics that can be recommended to treat persistent areas of gum inflammation.
- SURGERY – in worst cases flap surgery is resorted to, to lift back the gums while plaque is removed. The gums are later sutured in place to hug the tooth properly.
Home Remedies and Natural Treatment
- Good oral hygiene which includes longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing followed by using an antiseptic mouthwash
- Saltwater Rinse which reduces inflammation and kills bacteria
- Hydrogen peroxide as mouthwash can also reduce inflammation and effectively rids of bacteria
- Garlic Paste/Turmeric Paste/Baking Soda Paste can be used as toothpaste, all of which are full of antibacterial properties and will work as excellent anti-inflammatory agents
When you successfully rid your mouth of gingivitis, ask your dentist or hygienist if your brushing and flossing practices are actually done properly. It is also an important part of prevention to remove the risk factors mentioned above such as cigarette smoking and make sure to have a healthier and more balanced diets, which include food rich in vitamin C and calcium.
Chipped Tooth Remedy
“How Did I Chip my Tooth?”
Maybe you’re munching on something crunchy or being a little playful with a piece of hard candy when after a click, you notice something hard in your mouth that you can’t seem to crush. You realize it’s a piece of your tooth, so you panic. Don’t.
Chipping a tooth is absolutely normal. Although our teeth are remarkably tough, they can still crack or break. This can happen for several reasons, such as when one has weak tooth caused by cavities and simply loves to chew down on something too hard. It is also highly possible when one gets hit in the face or mouth or falls in a fight. Even one’s bad sleeping habits such as grinding or bruxism can cause breakage.
“Should I worry if it’s painful?”
Minor tooth fractures such as tooth chipping usually don’t cause pain. Your tongue just habitually feels the sharp area, so it will feel a little odd. If a large piece of the tooth breaks off, however, that’s when it can hurt pretty bad. This is because the nerve inside the tooth may already be damaged. In these rare cases, extreme discomfort happens because the nerve endings are totally exposed and become highly sensitive to hot or cold food or drinks or even as little as air. The pain may be constant or may come and go, and as such it is best to see your dentist to have it fixed.
“What can I do for the meantime?”
Although it is best that you see your dentist immediately especially when it is too painful, it might take a few days until you get to the dentist’s office. So while waiting it out, try doing the following:
- Rinse your mouth with warm water.
- If there are any bleeding areas, apply pressure on it with a clean cloth or a piece of gauze for a few minutes or until the bleeding stops. For heavy bleeding, a tea bag applied on the bleeding area might help.
- To reduce swelling and relieve pain, you may apply a cold pack to the cheek or lips over the broken tooth.
- Take an over-the-counter pain reliever.
- You might also want to cover the part of the tooth that is left in your mouth with temporary dental cement which can be bought at your nearest drugstore.
- Avoid temperatures that set off the sensitivity you may feel from the exposed pulp.
Remedies at the Clinic
If you still have the chipped tooth, store it in milk and save it for you dentist. Here are the possible procedures that your dentist might take:
- Glue the fragment back on to the tooth.
- Without the fragment, the dentist can use a tooth-coloured filling material to build the tooth up.
- Put a cap such as a filling or a crown.
- Install veneers.
- Root canal treatment but only with overly exposed nerves so that said nerve can be removed and placed with a root filling.

Healthy Teeth Halloween Dental Tip #2 – Control the Candy
Instead of allowing your kids to eat up all their Halloween treats in 1-2 days, we recommend putting the bucket aside, and to then ration it out in sensible amounts over time. Reducing how much candy your child eats is the important thing; too much candy will lead to tooth decay later on.
Healthy Teeth Halloween Dental Tip #3 – Water During Cand
If you’re out canvassing the neighborhood for Halloween, make sure your kids drink a lot of water. The water will help clear out any candy that gets stuck to their teeth, and it will also hydrate them during the evening’s activities. Too much sugar and not enough water can lead to some wired or cranky kids later in the night.
Avoid Hard & Sticky Candies
Parents – be on the lookout for those small hard and sticky candies. The length of time that a hard candy stays in a child’s mouth helps to increase the chances of more tooth decay. Studies show that the longer a kid has hard candy in his mouth, the longer time the sugar is there too. This greatly increases the growth of the bacteria that causes cavities to take root.
But what’s maybe even worse about hard candies is when kids bite down on these hard candies. That may actually break the fillings or teeth, or damage orthodontic work.
Avoid Gummy Candy
Gummy type bears, fish and other edible treats are nearly as bad as hard candies. Though they are softer, bits of the candy often get stuck in between teeth. Without a good flossing session, these bits of candy can stay inside the teeth, until finally washed away. But they can also impact the risk of tooth decay.
The most acceptable type of candy might be the soft, chewable, non-sticky candies like chocolates, liquid filled candy gels and M&M-type candies. They get absorbed quickly into the body and don’t linger in the teeth, thus helping to avoid cavity-causing bacteria. Lucky for most parents, children enjoy these types of candies, so if you can swap hard candies with these softer one, do it!
Healthy Teeth Halloween Dental Tip #4 – Candy Substitutions
Check your local grocer’s shelf for sugarless candy, sugarless gum and other candy substitutes. Look especially for ADA approved sugarless gum. Did you know that tooth decay can be greatly reduced by chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after meals? This is due to the gum chewing producing more saliva that helps flush out food particles and neutralize any acids.
Or avoid giving out candy altogether, instead band with local neighbors and decide to give out other Halloween treats instead of sugar-filled candy. Hand out pretend vampire teeth, bloody drinks (red dye), pumpkin stickers, Halloween toys and more. Having wisdom teeth removed is something many people will experience in their lifetime. There are several decisions to make and options to consider when preparing to have wisdom teeth taken out. One decision is figuring out when the best time will be to have the procedure done. The following information discusses why the summer is the best time to have wisdom teeth removed and how to prepare for the procedure.
Kids Have Time Away From School
Wisdom teeth generally come in when kids are either in high school or college. Since most kids in this age group will have summer off from regular school, this makes it an ideal time to have the wisdom teeth removed. Although recovery time will vary with each individual, there will be a certain amount of discomfort and healing that will need to take place before the person has fully recovered.
Right after the initial procedure the mouth will still be numb and it will be difficult to eat or speak. Sometimes there may still be minor bleeding as well. For the next few days there will probably be swelling and pain. Not having to worry about missing classes or falling behind on homework makes summer the ideal time to have the procedure done. While complications from having wisdom teeth removed are uncommon, infections can happen. Infections are easily treated with antibiotics, but this can increase complete recovery time. This is another reason to schedule wisdom teeth extraction during the summer.
Scheduling Before There Are Problems
Many dental professionals recommend having wisdom teeth removed before they begin causing problems. Getting a call from a son or daughter at college who is experiencing extreme tooth pain is not something a parent wants to hear. Wisdom teeth that erupt quickly can cause swelling, pain, and even infections in the mouth. Since there’s usually not room in a person’s mouth for their wisdom teeth, this can cause crowding and misalignment of other teeth as well. Roots are usually not fully formed when kids are still in high school and college. This will likely enable the person to recover more quickly from the surgery.
When it’s still early in the summer is the time to make preparations to have the wisdom teeth removed. With the kids out of school it will be easier to schedule around vacations and any extracurricular activities. If the wisdom teeth will be removed using general anesthesia the patient will likely be advised not to eat or drink anything for several hours before the procedure. It’s also advised to get plenty of rest the night before.
Post Operative Care
With kids at home and not as busy over the summer months it will be easier to monitor their post operative care. Drinking plenty of liquids while avoiding caffeine and hot beverages is part of a healthy recovery. It can take approximately 10 days for the extraction sites to fully heal, and sometimes even longer for the area under the gums. This is yet another reason it’s ideal to have the procedure done over the summer so a child is at home and has plenty of time to fully recover.

Easter means many things: family, friends, eggs, and Easter baskets. Easter baskets are a grand tradition that has been around for years, and one of the staples of the Easter basket is candy. With this in mind, how can you build a dental friendly Easter basket that can still delight your child without the negative dental and health impacts that come from loading it with candy?
Toys are a great way to fill an Easter basket. You can fill a basket with several small toys that your child will love. This is good for numerous reasons: first, you can fill the basket for a price similar to what you would have spent on the candy to fill it the same amount. Also, you will saving yourself the pain of having to deal with a sugar-addled child as well as saving them the potential health and dental problems that can follow them for the rest of their lives.
Play to your children’s hobbies. If your child is into sports, get them items related to their sports. A new glove for your Baseball player, a new Football for your Football player, or new cleats for your Soccer player, all excellent substitutes for candy in an Easter basket. You can also use this in a different way; maybe consider tickets to a professional sports game. If your child loves basketball, you could put tickets to a Jazz game in their Easter basket.
Coupons can be a very fun way to fill an Easter basket. These can be a bit of a risk initially, receiving paper in their Easter basket can sometimes disappoint kids but once they read the coupons, they’re sure to enjoy them. You can leave a wide variety of coupons that will be fun and beneficial for them. A coupon that states that they don’t have to do any chores for one day, or letting them pick what’s for dinner. A fun coupon that’s always a hit with kids is when they can make you do something that they would normally have to, something like “Choose a parent to do your chores for you for one night.”
You can fill your child’s Easter basket with different forms of activities. Coloring books are a great activity for filling an Easter basket. Board games are also an excellent way to fill an Easter basket; these have the added bonus of creating an opportunity for some quality family time with you and your child. You can also put tickets to the zoo or some other activity in the basket that you and your child can enjoy together.
Easter baskets without candy may seem strange but it can be a great way to teach your child lessons that benefit them in the future. You can use one of these ideas or a combination of several of them. The best way to go about it is to find some ideas that you know will work for your child, after all, nobody knows your child as well as you do.
